Many people will remember that, during the 1950's and 60's, David's father Harry and Uncle Emmanual Margolin was credited with "putting Melbourne on wheels". Between them they had 13 car yards in and around Melbourne.
David started working in the motor trade in 1975 in Camberwell, Vic, for a large European car retailer, and loved it so much he stayed for nine years before starting his own business in 1984.
Taking all his belongings and five cars to Sydney, he teamed up with his cousin Paul Margolin, and "Australian Auto Wholesale" was born.
Starting from a large shed off Parramatta Road in Five Dock, within 6 months Paul and David had made enough money to take on the lease on Parramatta Road itself.
The new car yard in Summer Hills was known as "Sydney European Car Centre"; now situated in Haberfield, it is Sydney's best known place to buy prestigious vehicles.
David left Paul to continue the business and returned to Melbourne to open Melbourne European Cars in February 1988. His love for the classical older European cars saw MEC indulge in classics like Mercedes coupes, convertibles and sports. They had five Mercedes Cabrioles (1962 to 1972) in the showroom in High Street, Armadale, the only place in Australia one could have seen so many collectibles under one roof. Two of the Benz was the rare 280SE 3.5 Cabrioles, of which only six came to Australia from new, and only 68 right-hand-drives were built for the entire world.
MEC has possibly Australia's best collection of the desirable Pagoda roof SLS, and a Ferrari F40, to mention a couple of the makes found there.
Since February 1992, the showroom has been at 216 York Street, South Melbourne, near the South Melbourne Market and City Road.
It hasn't been all clear sailing. David reveals that the recession hit collectible European cars hard. He had to sublet the showroom, and spent one-and-a-half years back in Sydney, where things were not as hard-felt.
Since 1994, though the market in the investment vehicles has gone from strength to strength, with people again realising that a good older European car, particularly a Mercedes Benz, is a better vehicle and has better resale value and is a safer motor car.
Determined not to stand still, David has opened a showroom in Port Melbourne.
If you are looking for an excellent investment - and a beautiful vehicle to ride around in - prestigious cars is certainly a pleasing option.
